Field Production Class Syllabus

In the Field Production Class, students will produce a documentary which will air on CTV. The topic of the documentary will be chosen by the students and voted on. Only a unanimous decision will be considered. We will learn the process of producing, i.e. pre-production, production and post-production.

It will be a six week course, meeting once a week for 2 1/2 hrs. Students who successfully complete the course will be certified to use our field equipment from that point on.

The first class will be devoted to defining what a documentary is, learning the process and listing the elements that make a documentary successful.

The next class will be devoted to learning how to use the production tools, i.e. cameras, mics, lights etc.

The next class will look at the post-production tools, i.e. editing equipment (probably iMovie and/or Final Cut Express).

The following three weeks will be devoted to producing the project. If the project is not completed at the end of six weeks, I will take whatever time it takes to finish it, inviting the students to help.
